News: Appeal Court Upholds Akpabio’s Election

The Court of Appeal has dismissed an appeal challenging the election of Senator Godswill Akpabio as Senator representing Akwa Ibom North-West senatorial district.

FUEL SCARCITY: FG FINALLY SETTLES OIL MARKETERS

The Federal Government on Wednesday finally approved the payment of N407.07bn as fuel subsidy to oil marketers.

Mr Ayodele Fayose has raised the alarm that Nigeria under President Buhari was fast becoming a shame, describing the failed attempt by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to manipulate the Bayelsa State governorship election as clear invitation to anarchy. The governor, who said it was shameful that the two elections conducted by INEC under Buhari’s kinsman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu were inconclusive, called on all well-meaning Nigerians and the international community to rise up in condemnation of the APC government’s plot to destroy democracy in the country.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cancelled the elections which held in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

INEC says the polls were marred by several electoral malpractices especially ballot box snatching and thuggery.

The situation in Southern Ijaw, according to INEC, renders the election inconclusive.

Bayelsa Election: INEC Reschedules Polls In Southern Ijaw

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rescheduled the governorship election in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

Just like in the case of the last presidential election, the card reader refuse to recognize the finger prints of former President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife Dame Patience as they tried to cast their votes in the Bayelsa State Governorship election.

Votes counting has commenced in many of the 91 polling units where the supplementary governorship election was held in Kogi on Saturday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that counting started early in some polling units due to early completion of voting largely because of poor turnout of voters.

It was gathered that the exercise started early in Okene, Adavi and Okehi local governments in the Kogi central senatorial district.

The state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr Halilu Pai, told NAN that results would be moved to the state office of INEC as soon as collation was concluded at the local government level.

He also said that he was not aware of any polling unit where the election did not take place, saying that reports from the various polling units would give a clearer picture of what transpired.

Pai described the election as peaceful and orderly and thanked the electorate for their conduct. However,

Unknown Gunmen Killed APC leader in Bayelsa State

Gunmen have killed one Diseye Dickson, the APC deputy ward leader at Odi in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government. Residents of the area say the APC leader was killed on Wednesday Dec. 2nd after the gunmen failed in their mission to abduct one Chief Watson Ogoriba, the elder brother to a former two-time member of the House of Representatives, Warman Ogoriba.

Five people have been confirmed dead in a twin bomb blast that rocked Kimba village in Biu local government area and Sabon gari district both in Borno state today. The bomb blast occurred between the hours of 8am and 12 noon today.

Former Finance commissioner in Adamawa state jailed 10 years for stealing N51.5m while in office

A Former commissioner for Finance and Local government and chieftaincy affairs during Boni Haruna’s administration in Adamawa state, John Elias, was today sentenced to 10 years in jail by a Federal High Court sitting in Yola for stealing N51.5 million from the state coffers while he was in office. The presiding judge, Justice Bilkisu Bello Aliyu, ordered the Corporate Affairs Commission to shut down the former commissioner's company, Alhakim Nigeria Limited which he allegedly used in siphoning the state funds.

Justice Aliyu delivered the judgement under section 3 (2) of the miscellaneous act and said the judgement will serve as a deterrent to occupiers of public office holders who may want to filter resources meant for developmental projects.

The judge convicted Elias on count 3 and 4 charges and imprisoned him to 10 years on each charge though the two convictions would run concurrently.

“I hereby sentenced the first accused, John Babani Elias for 10 years imprisonment on count 3 and another 10 years imprisonment on count 4 but the two sentences will run concurrently. In addition, the first convict must return/refund the sum of N51.5 million to Adamawa state local Government joint account fund from where it was stolen and diverted by him and his Coy. With regards to the second convict ALHAKIM NIGERIA LIMITED, I sentenced it to pay a fine of N5 million on the offenses in count 3 and 4 it is convicted of. In addition, the company would wound up by Corporate Affairs Commission as provided by section 3(2) of the miscellaneous offenses and all its assets forfeited to federal government of Nigeria,” he said.
